The Spartan army was the military force of Sparta, one of the leading city-states of ancient Greece. The army stood at the centre of the Spartan state, whose citizens' primary obligation was to be good soldiers. Subject to military drill from infancy, the Spartans were one of the most feared military forces in world history.

At Sparta's heyday in the 6th to 4th centuries BC, it was commonly accepted that "one Spartan was worth several men of any other state". The helmets, armour, weapons, tools, and everything else used by the Spartan army was made by a slave class called helots. The Spartan helmet, was usually made of bronze.

Kings and Generals had a crest on top - a row of horsehair meant to look like a horse's mane, to help scare the enemy.

The Spartan helmets gave very good protection but reduced vision and hearing quite a lot. Later on a hole was cut for the ears so Spartans could hear better. A cloth cap was also worn inside the Spartan helmet to soften blows to the head.
